This woodwork blank is from the ‘Ironwood Wattle’ tree which is one of Australia’s highly sought after native hardwoods. (Very Similar Strength and Janka Hardness as Gidgee Wood but lighter in colour with a more defined grain)
As you can see from the photos, the grain is just amazing.
You are viewing the raw timber, no water or oil have been applied.
It has a wide-ranging but scattered distribution throughout inland parts of southern inland Queensland extending into northern and central New South Wales
The below information was sourced from the www.wood-database.com
Common Name(s): Ironwood wattle
Scientific Name: Acacia excelsa
Distribution: Australia
Average Dried Weight: 71.8 lbs/ft3 (1,150 kg/m3)
Janka Hardness: 4,050 lbf (18,000 N)
Comments: A shrub or small tree, ironwood wattle is so named for the extremely dense wood which sinks in water. The wood is both very hard and also with interlocking grain, making it difficult to work, but it finishes well and has a good natural luster. Uses are limited to smaller items due to the size of the tree.
