This woodwork blank is from the Gidgee tree which is one of Australia’s highly sought after native hardwoods. Found primarily in semiarid and arid Queensland but also extends into the Northern Territory, South Australia and north-western New South Wales.
Gidgee (Acacia Cambagei) – also commonly know as the stinky wattle or stinky Gidgee is a great wood for carving and is highly sought after by knife makers. It has wonderful dark, reddish brown natural grains and looks amazing in its natural state or when finished. Gidgee is a hardwood that has a high degree of strength making it an ideal timber for your next carving project. Gidgee is ranked 4,270lbf on the Janka Hardness Scale.
